Ritual & Ceremony

Ritual for thresholds that deserve to be marked: birth, death, initiation, ending, beginning. Designed with you, drawn from your own lineage and the more-than-human world.

Why does ritual matter in therapy?

Because change that is not marked tends not to hold. Every culture on earth developed ceremonies for the moments when a life turns, and most of us have lost them or inherited versions that no longer fit. A wedding is a ritual. So is a funeral. So is the first meal you cook after someone leaves, if you let it be one.

We help you build the ceremony a threshold asks for. That might be a single evening or a season of small acts. It might draw on the traditions you were raised in, the ones you have chosen, or nothing more than the land you live on and the people who love you. The form is yours. Our job is to help you find it, hold the space while it happens, and make sure you are not doing it alone.

What kinds of thresholds do people bring?

A birth or a pregnancy loss. A death, whether recent or one that was never properly grieved. A divorce, a retirement, a move away from a home that held you. Sobriety. A name change, a gender transition, a coming out. The end of a long project. Turning fifty. Becoming a father. The day you stopped being someone's child.

Some people come for a threshold. Others discover, in therapy, that a threshold has been waiting for them.

Is this part of therapy or separate from it?

Either. Ritual is woven into the psychotherapy we do, when it fits and when you want it. It is also offered on its own through Holistic Help, our non-clinical work, for people who are not in therapy with us or who live outside Maine and New York.
